North Korea: New holiday

Late 2017 – early 2018 // There are signs of a shift in a state that has struggled to feed its citizens for decades. Pyongyang is enjoying a building and consumption boom and the leadership is trying out new economic policies with the aim to copy the successful Chinese. For North Korean citizens, New Years is a public holiday, and most people have a few days off. Despite the extremely cold December weather on the Korean peninsula may citizens of Pyongyang enjoy their free time in amusement parks or the city zoo. While others visit one of the many newly build indoor activities, like ice skating, bowling or water parks. But Pyongyang is a city for upper class and party members, most other areas of the vast country is still of limits to outsiders.
